3D Digital Twin - Models and Measurements

Table of Contents

CloseOut allows users to create 3D Digital Twin scans, store georeferenced models, and take various precise measurements on them.

  • Viewing & Measuring: Supported on both iOS and Android devices.
  • Scanning: Requires a newer iOS device with a built-in LiDAR scanner ( iPhone 12 series and newer, iPad Pro 2020 and newer)

3D Digital Twin feature is accessible from sites list in GIS Works navigator, shown as square icon next to a site ( network element ) name. Sites with stored 3D Digital Twin will have 3D Digital Twin cube icon highlighted in blue. Tap it to open 3D Digital Twin screen.

Measurement tools

CloseOut 3D Digital Twin feature offers a comprehensive suite of manual and automated measurement tools to analyze and measure captured scans:

Manual measurements

  • Point - Drops a pinpoint marker to display latitude and longitude coordinates
  • Distance - Calculates the linear distance between any two selected points.
  • Height - Calculates the vertical distance between any two selected points.
  • Path - Connect multiple sequential points to calculate segment distances and total path length
  • Area - Calculates the surface area within a polygon formed by selecting three or more points

Automated measurements

  • Length - Automatically detects open trenches, plots a centerline route, and calculates total trench length
  • Depth - Automatically detects open trenches and plots depth measurement points based on configurable point density and minimum depth thresholds. Displays individual point depths and the overall average depth.
  • Width - Automatically detects open trenches and plots measurement points along the trench based on configurable point density and minimum depth thresholds. Displays individual point widths and the overall average width.
  • Volume - Automatically detects open trenches and calculates total volume in cubic meters (m3)
  • Poles - Automatically detects utility poles across the scan and calculates straight-line distances between them

Geo-referencing scans and measurements

All scans and measurements captured in 3D Digital Twin are geo-referenced, mapping every point in the scan to precise geographic coordinates. The exact georeferencing accuracy of the scans and measurements depends primarily on the positioning technology used by the device at the time of capture ( RTK vs GPS ) and, to a lesser extent, environmental conditions during scanning.

Exporting the 3D Digital Twin measurement's snapshot

When the measurement is complete, for every of them you have an option to take a snapshot, and upload it to the predefined media placeholder in corresponding workflow.

Once your measurement is complete, follow these steps to save and upload the snapshot of the measurement:

  1. Tap the Share icon next to the completed measurement.
  2. Corresponding workflow structure pop up will appear. Select the target media placeholder within the workflow structure and tap Next.
  3. Review the generated snapshot and add an optional comment if needed.
  4. Tap Submit to upload the snapshot.
  5. Once submitted, snapshot photo will be undergoing validation for the quality of works. The media placeholder icon will change from gray to green to indicate if the position is complete ( minimum number of accepted photos required is met ) In the event of a rejection, you will receive a push notification. Tapping the notification takes you directly to the item, where you can review the decision and the accompanying comment detailing the exact reason for rejection.

Validation

Very much like any other photo in CloseOut, once the snapshot of the measurement is uploaded, it enters a quality audit, pending review by either an AI agent or a back-office quality specialist. The AI agent returns a decision (ACCEPTED or REJECTED) within seconds, whereas a manual review by a quality specialist takes longer depending on the case volume of work and complexity of the inspection. By default, field technicians get notified only for rejected measurement snapshots. CloseOut will not stop you from creating more measurement snapshots than required. If the measurement snapshots meet the quality standards and have passed the quality audit but are redundant, a quality controller can assign them a special 'Not Needed' status, so they are excluded from the final report. These measurement snapshots are not rejected, as a rejection in CloseOut notifies field workers and indicates poor quality of work or an incorrect item position.

When the LLM AI model is configured for quality checks on a position, it provides a detailed breakdown in the comment for every decision, citing the evaluated criteria and pinpointing the exact issues requiring correction whenever a measurement snapshot is rejected.
